Wednesday, April 23, 2025 - Junior Teagan Nelson spent the morning job shadowing Winola Elementary special education teacher Amanda Fritch — an experience Fritch says offers students a powerful perspective.

“I think it’s good they can come and see what it’s like,” she said. “It’s so rewarding.”

The opportunity was coordinated by Julie Drish, Academic Coordinator, who connects students with career exploration experiences based on their interests. Junior Avree Newton also participated, shadowing Jen Schultz, a special education teacher at Matherville Intermediate.

“I am here to help the students, whether setting up a job shadow, applying to college, or exploring trade opportunities.” said Drish. “We had another student shadow at Elliott Aviation this year. Anytime somebody wants to do a visit, I try to help place them. I have a database of former Sherrard people I reach out to… I'd love to see more students interested in taking advantage of these opportunities.”

Drish also supports college visits and trade career exploration. This Friday, she’ll guide 8th through 11th grade students through the Sherrard Trades Career Fair, now in its fourth year. Seniors may attend by appointment.

“Thanks to the generous support of more than 30 local businesses, this fair gives students the chance to explore fulfilling career paths outside the traditional four-year college route,” Drish said. “Their enthusiasm, knowledge, and passion are what make this event a success year after year.”

From classrooms to career floors, opportunities like these reflect the strength of the Sherrard community in empowering students to discover what’s possible.
