1990 Sherrard graduates—and husband-and-wife team—Candace (Epperly) and Dr. Kyle Gagliardo are making a lasting impact far beyond the classroom and dental office. For the past 13 years, the pair has dedicated their time and talents to The Iowa Mission of Mercy (IMOM), a free, two-day dental clinic that serves thousands of patients each year.

Candace, who has taught English at Sherrard High School for 18 years, coordinates volunteers for the large-scale event. Dr. Gagliardo is one of about 500 licensed dentists and professionals who provide cleanings, fillings, extractions, and other dental care—completely free of charge. No insurance is required, and free childcare is provided on-site.

"IMOM is a great way to help people with no strings attached—for the patients and the volunteers," said Dr. Gagliardo. "It’s one of the most rewarding events I’ve ever been a part of."

Candace describes the clinic as a highlight of her year. "I love spending three days with 1,000 of my friends giving people something they really need," she said. "The smiles on patients’ faces and the relief when they leave makes it all worthwhile."

This year’s IMOM clinic will be held Sept. 19–20 at the Hyatt Regency in Coralville, Iowa. Doors open at 6 a.m. each day, and services are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Informational Flyer

Illinois law requires dental exams for students in Kindergarten, 2nd, 6th, and 9th grades. For families looking for additional dental resources,  the Mercer County Health Department partners with our district to bring a mobile dental clinic to the schools in the spring. It’s a convenient option for families, and all students with parental permission are welcome. Watch the district website for details and forms.
