Sherrard School District Celebrates Veterans Day with District-Wide Tribute

Sherrard High School hosted an all-district Veterans Day Assembly on Nov. 11. Gym bleachers were filled with students, teachers and staff from across the district; the gym floor was filled with local veterans, the community, and distinguished guests.

Students from across the district honored veterans through music, instruments, art, video and even baking!

Upon entry, veterans were welcomed by National Honor Society students and FFA students holding flags to represent each branch of the military.

Veterans and their families were escorted to the library for a refreshment reception. Jacque Hamerlink’s HS Foods class made fresh baked muffins, plus other goodies were on-hand, organized by Media Specialist Jill Bennin. Guests enjoyed hand-drawn messages on the patriotically decorated tables.

The featured speaker, Lieutenant Colonel Melissa Sayers, First Army Operations Research Systems Analyst, cut straight to the heart of the day,

“In my eyes, each and every one of these veterans is a hero – a title which they earned by serving this great country of ours.” She told students to remember real life heroes, “Let’s say ‘Thank you!’ to our veterans – the heroes among us. Let’s show them that we care about them and give them the respect they deserve. Let’s tell them that we’re proud of them, and that we want to be more like them – that we want to serve others, and make a positive impact with our own lives.”

Lt. Col. Sayers served in the United States Army for 24 years and is currently stationed at Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois.

The assembly can be rewatched on the ‘live’ stream posted to our District Facebook Page wall.
