Veterans Day all-district assembly teaches students the importance of honoring Veterans

The Veterans Day all-school assembly was held on Friday, Nov. 11, in the morning at the high school gym.

Guest Veterans arrived early for donuts in the auditorium and were ushered into the gym while the names of those who served scrolled on the projector screen - and attendees stood applauding.

FFA Officers carried flags representing every branch of the military to the front where they stood with the flags for the remainder of the assembly.

The high school choir sang the National Anthem while the entire gym stood in reverence.

Special guest speakers included, Master Sgt. Matt Schlehuber, US First Army, stationed with Rock Island Arsenal, IL, and Capt. William "Hawk" Albracht, a highly decorated Vietnam veteran and retired Secret Service agent.

Students across the district were asked what Veterans Day means to them. A video of them and their answers was played.

A special message to Sherrard students from 1986 alumni - Army Lieutenant General Steven Gilland, 61st Superintendent of the US Military Academy at West Point, was broadcast during the ceremony.

To end the assembly, the Sherrard Band played The Armed Forces Medley while Matherville Intermediate students sang along.
