December Tiger Talent Award; Carly Minch

Carly Minch, 4th grade teacher at Winola Elementary, received the “Tiger Talent Dedication” award during the school board meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

Superintendent Dr. Carl Johnson implemented the award for “...those who model, build and encourage positive character qualities - speaking into students’ lives by word and deed that will resonate for years to come and help guide them to become the leaders and contributing community members of tomorrow.”

“We all remember that one person who said or did something that stuck with us - they made us feel important, they noticed our strengths, and it's something we revisit in times of struggle... Those deserve to be acknowledged for their dedication,” said Dr. Johnson.

She received a golden metal apple with “Tiger Talent” inscribed to commemorate her hard work.

Principal Kari Roberts wrote the following about Minch:

I am pleased to nominate Carly Minch to receive the Tiger Talent award. Carly displays her dedication to the Sherrard School District each and every day, whether she is in the classroom, managing events for the Booster Club, or is out and about at various community events. She began her educational career with our district. She served as a student teacher, received a classroom position shortly after that, and found her true calling in the 4th grade where she has touched the lives of many students over the years.

She is a leader in the Winola Elementary building. She is currently serving on the Building Leadership Team. Many teachers look to her for guidance and support, particularly in the areas of technology and classroom management. This year, she has served as an informal mentor to a new teacher in the building. That teacher is often expressing her gratitude for Carly’s patience and direction. Throughout the years, Carly has grown with using technology in her classroom in many ways. She attends the annual ICE (IDEACon) Conference with a district team, and brings back many ideas to share with the rest of the teaching staff. In fact, she is already having conversations about this year’s conference and the sessions she intends to choose to benefit all of the teachers and students of Winola.

She can always be counted on to complete tasks in an efficient manner. Her organizational skills are top-notch, and they serve her well in her work with the Booster Club. You can often see Carly at the high school after our school day ends, volunteering her time to make sure that the older students of Sherrard receive the many benefits that the Booter Club brings to the activity programs. Their own children have graduated, yet Carly and her husband Chad continue to hold vital roles to ensure the Booster Club’s success.Carl and Carly

Above all, Carly’s gifts and talents shine through in her daily interactions with her students and this is reflected in their attainment of their achievement goals. Her students are actively engaged in learning throughout the day, and their love for school shows. They often participate in real-life learning scenarios, and their projects serve the school, as well as those outside of the school. The “little library” outside of our school is a great example of this. The book vending machine within the school will supply books for students for years. The Bean Field in Viola also uses her students’ artwork to decorate their coffee sleeves. She is an alumnus of the district, and her passion for sustaining the success of the school district and the community shows.

Thank you, Carly, for all of your contributions to the Sherrard School District. You are a true model for what it means to have Tiger Talent.
