“In June of 2012, B.J. gave the ultimate sacrifice and this is just one small way that we can pay tribute to his memory. B.J. gave his life for millions of people and now our students and community members can save lives through a blood donation in his name. We want to ensure that his memory and selflessness live on,” said Special Education Teacher Vanessa Schulenberg. She’s the All-School Senate sponsor and a special education teacher at the high school.
Every year the All-School Senate organizes the drive in memory of CPL Bryant J. (B.J.) Luxmore, a 2005 Sherrard graduate killed in action in Afghanistan on June 10, 2012.
“We had a great turnout! We had a goal of 60 appointments, which we met. Our collection goal was 33 units and we were able to collect 47. To put things into perspective, last year we collected 24,” said Schulenberg.
She said the blood drive began in his honor in 2013 - initially started by high school English teacher Tammy Crippen.

Luxmore’s parents Brenda and Leonard were in attendance, “It’s an honor for us. We’re grateful,” said Brenda. Jaimie Johnston, his widow, was among the first to give blood.
All-School Senate President Ella Spengler said senate members had to make phone calls, email people, and contact the blood donation organization Impact Life. She said they also arrive early to get things set up.
The drive, held through ImpactLife, brought grant dollars to the Tiger Closet totaling $287. Items purchased included things like toilet paper, hair ties, face wash, dry shampoo and chapstick.
According to statistics in an email from ImpactLife Donor Relations Consultant Morgan McEnroe, “We collected 37 units, which will go on to help save the lives of up to 111 people and continue to help provide critical units for our local hospital shelves.”

“Sherrard HS absolutely rocked it! We had 47 people present, including 25 people being first-time donors. Kudos to those rolling up their sleeves for the first time!” Said McEnroe.

The Red Cross club will be having their spring blood drive on Monday, May 2, at the high school from 8 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
