D.A.R.E. Graduation at Matherville

Fifth graders celebrated graduating from the D.A.R.E. program implemented by the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department last week, Feb. 8, with a pizza party and a ceremony.

Sheriff Dusty Terrill has been the ‘DARE Officer’ since 2014. The program focuses on lessons on the dangers of harmful substances and how to respond to peer pressure, among other things.

“DARE is a program that not only provides the tools needed to help students make safe, responsible choices - it facilitates a positive relationship between Law Enforcement and young people. It builds trust and fosters the belief that Police Officers are safe people that they can approach, speak with and ask for help when needed.

I have had many previous students who are now nearing adulthood approach me to talk and share their memories of DARE. Those relationships can really make a difference in our community,” said Sheriff Terrill.
