The Superintendent Search Begins with Community/Staff Forums
May 26, 2021 - Tom Leahy, director of executive searches for Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) conducted a community forum to gather input on the search for a new superintendent on Wednesday. Leahy was hired by the school board on the heels of Superintendent Alan Boucher's announcement of his retirement at the end of the 2021/2022 school year.

A walk to Disney with Sherrard Elementary
Sherrard Elementary students walked to Disney early this year. That is, they added the number of miles walked all together until they ‘reached Disneyland’ in California. Get outside, get exercise, get a mask break and get some fresh air.

Cheerleaders Raise Funds for Uniforms/Mats
Cheerleaders raised a total of $3,131.40 doing a ‘Push-up fundraiser' during the football season. “The cheer girls have always done pushups for touchdowns. After the first game, we decided to do a ‘push up pledge’ for every point the football team scored; parents/fans LOVED when the girls did the push ups, so it just seemed like an awesome thing to do,” she said.

National Honor Society Inducts Sherrard students
Sherrard HS National Honor Society Inductees for 2021 participated in an online induction ceremony produced by the National NHS office to coincide with their 100th anniversary.

Sherrard Celebrated Excellence at an Academic Awards Ceremony
Seniors and a limited number of guests were invited to the Sherrard High School Academic Awards Night. The annual event usually features every class, but had to be paired down to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines.

Winola students check out the library
Beginning in the 4th quarter students at Winola Elementary have been able to take trips to the library - with COVID-19 guidelines in place. Thanks to the creative thinking of Library Aide Tracey Robbins.

Making PE fun
Junior high students in PE at Sherrard Junior High had a unique lesson recently - when they learned the sport of fencing.

Sherrard's biggest fan returns to the stands
For Christy Koepke, it’s been a difficult year - since everything has been closed because of the pandemic. But when she heard the news that she would be attending three Sherrard volleyball games in one night (April 6), she cried happy tears of joy and shock.

Tigers Through Time
A "Tigers Through Time" mural was put up in the high school's 'B hallway' over the long weekend. We wanted something to show a little history of SHS while including some current events/students and came up with the 'Tigers Through Time' theme."

Annual fundraiser at Winola held virtually
"I think we made some memories we are not soon to forget."
Winola Elementary students raised a total of $5900 for the American Heart Association. For surpassing their $5,000 goal - PE Teacher Bev Krueger spent the day following their virtual assembly interacting with students as the Tiger mascot. -
Maddison Barnhill - Teacher Feature March 2021
“We had so much fun together, and that's when I decided this is the district I would love to work in! Now that I have spent two years with my Matherville family, I know this is the place I want to be,” said 5th grade teacher Maddison Barnhill of her time student-teaching with Mrs. Hoover’s second grade class at Winola.

Sherrard School District gets creative for homecoming week
The weather was sunny with a high of 64 degrees, not a cloud in the sky - a perfect compliment to the much-anticipated community event, the Sherrard School District homecoming parade, held last Saturday, March 20. Traditionally, the parade is held in the fall prior to a home football game and in conjunction with a homecoming dance, but due to pandemic guidelines the parade had to be held during the spring, and creative ideas took hold to replace the dance.

Music teacher orchestrates digital music creation
Sixth grader Maxx Stracevich won “Best in school” in a music composition competition as part of an assignment in music class at Matherville Intermediate. Second place went to 5th grader Landon Clark.

Lori Arnold - Teacher Feature February 2021
After 28 years teaching in Sherrard schools, Lori Arnold had this to say when asked why Sherrard, “I don't ask why Sherrard - I ask why not? It's a great community and district. I can make more money by teaching in Moline or Rock Island but there's something about rural schools. Everyone knows everyone and it's a family atmosphere. Everyone has your back.”

Sherrard Schools a "beacon district" according to Superintendent Boucher
The Sherrard School Board voted to update their “Return to Learn” Plan last Wednesday, Feb. 17. The plan is a document outlining conduct and mitigations the district is implementing to facilitate in-person learning. The district has had the option of five days in-person instruction or full remote learning since school started on Aug. 17, 2020.

Matherville students make 250 Valentine's Day cards for seniors
Evelyn Weakley remembers going with her family to deliver cards to senior living homes when she was little, “They were really happy when they saw the cards, that made me happy - and I wanted to do this because I wanted them to be happy like that.”

A persuasive writing project had a tasty outcome for third graders at Winola Elementary last week. They had no idea they were designing a donut they would actually get to eat, thanks to Hurts Donut Co. - Quad Cities.

Stacy Harroun is a 6th grade math teacher in her 6th year at Matherville Intermediate. Harroun holds a Bachelor of Elementary Education degree from WIU (2010), Masters in Teaching and Leadership from SXU (2016), and is currently working on a 2nd masters in Administration at WIU.
